Why justice matters in compensation decision making

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the influence of justice in compensation decision making. The agency theory and the stakeholder fairness concept were used as the conceptual base. Four sets of pay procedures were examined, namely, pay determination, performance appraisal, communication and appeal. Pay satisfaction, supervisor satisfaction and organizational commitment were used as evaluation criteria. Results showed that just outcomes are crucial since they reduce the risk of decreased output and, consequently, profit.

A drop in the bucket: when is a pay raise a pay raise?

Article Abstract:

A model was developed to assess the employee psychological threshold which qualifies a merit pay increase as a 'true' pay increase. Results showed that employees respond positively and categorize pay raises as 'true' pay raises only when the amount represents equal and above 7% of the base pay. An increase of 7% or more elicits both cognitive response and performance improvements.
