Women's employment and child care in Brazil

Article Abstract:

Mothers with young children are generally unemployed because most of their time are spent on child rearing. However, mothers' household chores and child care responsibilities can be assumed by older daughters and elderly women of the same household. This allows mothers to find employment elsewhere. However, daughters who take the place of caring for younger siblings are prevented from formal schooling.

State enterprise and employment generation in Brazil

Article Abstract:

A comparison of employment generation abilities of private and public enterprises in Brazil is conducted regarding capital-intensive industries. Results show that government-owned firms tend to generate fewer jobs than private firms. There appears to be a need for the government to redirect development efforts away from capital-intensive to labor-intensive sectors to improve employment performance.
