A Queen for whose time? Elizabeth I as icon for the twentieth century

Article Abstract:

The British Queen Elizabeth I is portrayed variously in television series and movies as a quasi-feminist heroine intending to advance her political career, and as a motivating force behind the artistic and literary production of the English Renaissance, and behind Shakespeare in particular. Her rhetoric skills and style combined with her determination and ambition make her an ideal icon for the twentieth century, which ironically was seen to be manifested not in Queen Elizabeth II, but in the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
