A lamp to the nation flickers

Article Abstract:

No other Western country has taken in more refugees and immigrants than Canada. However, 1992 has seen a significant decrease in the number of alien admissions to the country. Officials claim that this move is in response to refugees' abuse of lenient Canadian laws. On the other hand, alien advocate groups say that this is the government's way of appeasing the Canadians' growing resentment towards foreigners. Anti-alien sentiments have been increasing, as evidenced by the popularity of groups denouncing the presence of aliens in the country.

The rising number of refugees find fewer welcoming arms

Article Abstract:

Refugees may soon find it difficult to resettle in the US. Federal funds for resettlement has drastically declined and the trend is less likely to change in the coming years. Whereas the administration has allocated $410 million for refugees in the FY 1992, only $227 million has been prepared for the FY 1993. Refugee advocates fear that the budget cut will translate into limited admittance of refugees.
