A posteriori stereotype activation: the preservation of stereotypes through memory distortion

Article Abstract:

An a posteriori activation of stereotypes deteriorates the recall of stereotype-inconsistent behavior of individuals, but does not influence the recall of stereotype-consistent information. The stereotype-biased retrieval occurs due to involuntary and unconscious cognitive processes rather than from an intentional search strategy. The reduced access to stereotype-inconsistent traits as a result of a posteriori stereotype activation impairs the recall of stereotype-inconsistent information. Theoretical implications for the observations are presented.

Memory performance of late middle-aged adults: Contrasting self-stereotyping and stereotype threat accounts of assimilation to age stereotypes

Article Abstract:

A study aims to contrast stereotype threat and self-stereotyping accounts of behavioral assimilation to age stereotypes and to investigate the role of identity in that process. The results are moderated by implicit age identity, and only participants who have started making the identity translation into older adulthood are affected by manipulation.

Stereotype-biased search and processing of information about group members

Article Abstract:

The contribution of biased information search and biased information processing to stereotyping of individual group members is examined. It is argued that biased information search is a major obstacle to the reduction of stereotyping in many real-life situations.
