A subnational study of insurgency: FARC violence in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

The traditional political and economic factors that explain the prevalence of insurgency are examined in Colombia where these issues can be analyzed at the subnational level and because of the variability of violence within the country. The hypotheses tested include the higher levels of insurgency associated with low levels of GDP per capita or negative growth rates, the emergence of guerrilla violence and higher levels of state repression associated with higher levels of violence.
