Adaptation of Salvadoran refugees in Montreal

Article Abstract:

The adaptation process of 11 Salvadoran men and 11 Salvadoran women, below 23 years of age, who have settled in Montreal, Canada, with special focus on their isolation experiences is examined. Key elements emerged in their isolation experiences. The inability to speak French plus the absence of a Salvadoran community to provide social support contributed to their feelings of isolation. Sex and marital status were also found to be factors. Single men felt more isolated and suffered more from being separated from their families, especially from their mothers.

Psychosocial intervention for the Salvadoran population displaced by the war

Article Abstract:

The Salvadoran government and the UN commissioned a team of experts to develop a national psychosocial strategy that would address the prevailing complacency, dependence and unmotivated attitudes of the Salvadoran refugees of war in the refugee camps. The strategy aims to educate the population in the development of personal and social values and find trainable potential leaders who would lead, inform and educate their constituents towards reassimilation into the mainstream society.

Immigrants, refugees and displaced people in Southern Africa

Article Abstract:

A massive educational and social welfare program should be implemented to eliminate the high level of xenophobia in South Africa. There is an existing impression that illegal immigrants tend to dominate and threaten the country, as such 'illegals' depart from the economic, political and social upheavals in their own countries. Still, the fact that South Africa is the richest country in Africa will not put an end to such an occurrence.
