Analyzing derived stimulus relations requires more than the concept of stimulus class

Article Abstract:

The use of class constructs for both products and processes has obscured the differences between stimulus relations and stimulus classes and has confused the examination of derived stimulus relations. Defining derived stimulus relations in terms of stimulus classes can thus produce unnecessarily limited analyses of the behavioral aspects of language and thinking. Research indicates that the assessment of nonarbitrary stimulus relations can be facilitated by a method that allows subjects to discuss or evaluate the stimulus relations of a given task.

Standard principles, nonstandard data, and unsolved issues

Article Abstract:

Horne and Lowe's erred in tracing the failure of equivalence relations to the artificiality of match-to-sample techniques. It is the lack of theoretical principles rather than the artificiality of experimental situations that mars the concept. They also erred in using behavioral principles to explain nonhuman behavior. The results of numerous research undertakings indicate that many behavioral principles need either revision or supplementation to account for various unexplained human and nonhuman behavioral phenomena.

Equivalence relations

Article Abstract:

Pauline J. Horne and C. Fergus Lowe's criticism of Murray Sidman's position on equivalence relations erred because Sidman does not maintain a stand on the issue of equivalence relations. He relies on data instead of on debate to establish the validity of academic concepts and theories. His writings offered suggestions for looking at phenomena classified under equivalence relations as well as experiments that may test the viability of his suggestions.
