Antimafia efforts in Italy, 1992-1997

Article Abstract:

The anti-Mafia campaign in Italy has made significant progress since the death of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino from car bombings in 1992. The Mafia's senior bosses have been arrested and their successors are more inclined to cooperate with the authorities. The most important task currently for the Italian police is the identification and confiscation of the Mafia's assets. However, Italy still faces a long struggle in its quest to eliminate the Mafia, which can only be done through the promulgation of laws that prevent organized crime.

Recent narcotics and mafia research

Article Abstract:

A survey of recent research on narcotics trafficking and mafia activities reveals that it is unlikely that huge investments in the 1990s by the US to curtail drug use will have the desired effect. Studies of drug use and trafficking in Latin America focus on their role in larger issues of economic development. Studies in the US and UK focus on the relation of drug use and criminality. A Financial Action Task Force has been set up in the 15 major industrialized countries to study means to prevent money laundering.
