Associational membership as a source of social capital: Its links to use of local newspaper, interpersonal communication, entertainment media, and volunteering

Article Abstract:

The links of associational membership to use of local newspaper, interpersonal communication, entertainment media and volunteering in community activities among 308 African Americans and 328 Caucasians in a large metropolitan area, and 349 Caucasians in a small city/rural area is examined. Associational membership mediated the effects of local newspaper use and interpersonal communication on volunteering, but entertainment media use had an independent and negative effect.

Media system dependency and public support for the press and president

Article Abstract:

A study was done on Ball-Rokeach and DeFleur's media system dependency theory to analyze the public opinion regarding the performance of the news media and the president before and after the September 11, 2001 attacks. The study revealed that public appreciated the role of news media in communicating the impact of crisis and that the viewers who approved of the news media and its humanistic roles, also approved of the president.

The rural-urban gap in community newspaper editor's use of information technologies

Article Abstract:

The study shows that community newspaper editors in urban areas are much more likely to use computer technology for news gather and actual production of their newspaper. Rural editors are more likely to rely on traditional method because they lack access and training.
