Back on track: asking and answering the right questions

Article Abstract:

Criminology is invoking new theoretical models to gain insight on the social factors behind criminal activity. The most promising approach to applying social disorganization and control theories is the study of large-scale social organizations and their effect on local and neighborhood societies. Other theorists are studying the culture of poverty and neighborhoods to draw correlations between social factors and crime, but without an understanding of the social factors behind the existence of these neighborhoods, their research has little applicable merit.

Social structure and social control: building theory

Article Abstract:

Social control is gaining acceptance as a viable theoretical base in sociology. The emerging sociology consensus distinguishes social control processes from each other, with most scholars focusing on external control as it relates to social disorganization and conflict theories. These notions are now being applied in studies of delineated societies such as agrarian economies and urban centers, as well as historical studies.

Social class, social selves and social control in childbirth

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding the implications of social class and social control for childbirth are discussed. A group of 50 narratives of the birthing experience are explored and the power relations as they appear in childbirth analyzed. The findings indicate that the importance of social class for the shaping of identity can be transcended by the experience of childbirth itself, which occurs in women of all social classes.
