Barriers to treatment: systemic and cultural obstacles experienced by refugees and immigrants

Article Abstract:

The US has funded several projects in providing refugees and other displaced peoples with economic, social and legal assistance. However, very few of these refugees ever come to these centers due to certain systemic and cultural obstacles. To resolve these matters, certain measures should be taken to encourage refugees to come forward and avail of the offered assistance, including the proper allocation of resources, the hiring of staff that speak the same language as the refugee and volunteer training to help them deal more effectively with refugee women and children.

Refugees living with depression: some diagnostic perspectives

Article Abstract:

Depression is common among refugees and is often caused by the experience of loss. The condition may take the form of hopelessness, helplessness, anxiety, lethargy or anger. Although case workers would often subscribe to counseling, medical and psychiatric interventions, a systems approach may be more effective when dealing with refugees' depression. Refugees may need attention, companionship, food and housing more than medical intervention.

Psychoreactive depression: refugees and alcohol abuse

Article Abstract:

Anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse are commonly observed in refugee population because of the situations, incidents and circumstances which refugees experience. Anxiety and depression can be easily identified compared to depression which is psychoreactive to alcohol abuse. These three conditions also interplay with one another. Understanding their interrelationships may help in the treatment of such conditions.
