Between class and nation: ideology and radical Basque ethnonationalism

Article Abstract:

Ethnic nationalist movements in Basque Country in northern Spain chose to adopt radical ideology despite the downfall of socialism and communism in Europe. Political parties, trade unions and youth movements which are among the nationalist movements, attempted to lure the working class to embrace leftist ideology. Such attempts had caused political violence in the region because of conflicting ideologies between the government and nationalists.

What makes a revolution? Burma's revolt of 1988 and a comparative analysis of the revolutions of the late 1980s

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the Burmese revolt of 1998 and associate it with other uprisings in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. Several theories of revolution were reviewed to examine the revolt. Actions of the state and of the opposition, psychological factors, and the structure of the state of opposition were also discussed. Results indicated that theories of revolution can be utilized to characterize the Burmese revolt.

The embourgeoisement of revolutionary regimes: reflections on Abdallah Laroui

Article Abstract:

The failure of Marxist and 'Marxian' ideas in explaining the evolution of revolutionary regimes in recent times has been studied. Abdallah Laroui's notion about revolutions have also been examined and compared with Marxist revolutionary theory. Laroui argued that capitalism results from the normal process of embourgeoisement in revolutionary regimes. His ideas are investigated if they are applicable today and in the future.
