Between paradigms: a half-century of sociological research on alcohol

Article Abstract:

Two books review and critique the sociological evolution of alcohol research since the 1940s. They include multivariate studies of the etiology and classification of drinking and its related problems. Sociological perceptions of alcohol should recognize that drinking behavior can be examined sociologically. This analysis will help social policy handle alcohol associated problems, but it must transcend the alien if it is to explore the positive role of alcohol and the cultural and institutional foundations of drinking behavior.
