Bigger stores, more stores, or no stores: paths of retail restructuring in rural America

Article Abstract:

Analysis on the different paths of retail restructuring in America between 1988-1999 is discussed, focusing on changes in the geographic distribution and size of retail establishments in nonmetropolitan counties in America. As throughout the U.S., the restructuring process in retail differs, broad generalizations on the restructuring nature and impacts have to be taken into consideration.

Digital development in rural areas: potentials and pitfalls

The data for the USA concerning the digital divide and access of residences and business, which tend to suggest that all is well, is examined. Data on aspects of digital infrastructure in rural America is also presented. The serious pitfalls are those related to shortages of human capital is analyzed.

The social economy of rural life: an introduction

An interdisciplinary framework is suggested for rural studies, with cultural, social, economic, international and material approaches. It is posited that such approaches will erase practical and academic limitations and enhance the viability of the discipline.
