Bookstore blues: Sociology for sale: The little bookshop around the corner isn't there anymore

Article Abstract:

Bookshops are increasingly categorising books by professional sociologists under the broader title of 'Cultural Studies' or 'Psychology'. Book retailers have found that books placed under 'Sociology' do not sell as well as other descriptors, and University Press Books, Berkeley, CA has even had more success selling sociology titles under the denominations of management, economics, political science and geography.

Theory building and cheap talk about legitimation: reply to Baum and Powell

Article Abstract:

An analysis of institutions in studying the legitimation of organizational forms is restrictive compared with the density-dependence model. It is argued that density dependence actually incorporates both institutional and ecological assertions. A comparison of institutionalism and density dependence is perceived as biased, since the former excludes axiomatic theories, formal models and systematic comparisons.

Cultivating an institutional ecology of organizations: comment on Hannan, Carroll, Dundon, and Torres

Article Abstract:

The three premises underlying the conclusion that no alternative to the study of the legitimation of organizational evolution has been found are rejected. The credibility of the social processes implied in the density-dependence model is also criticized. It is maintained that density-dependence arguments limit the analysis of legitimation to a few institutional factors.
