Boundary at work: alternative medicine in biomedical settings

Article Abstract:

The article examines ways in which biomedical practitioners (such as physicians) protect their professional knowledge while collaborating with practitioners of alternative medicine. Marginalization and exclusion are identified as the primary mechanisms biomedical practitioners use to establish boundaries.

On practices of 'good doctoring': reconsidering the relationship between provider roles and patient adherence

Research indicates that the concepts of physician roles and patient adherence are much more varied in practice than the definitions presented in the current literature. Discussion focuses on how physicians tailor their actions to particular patients so that treatment compliance can be maximized.

Abortion discourse in Bolivian hospital contexts: doctors' repertoire conflicts and the Saving Women device

Article Abstract:

Discourse analysis is applied to Bolivian physicians' discussion of the topic of abortion, focusing on how they express compliance with and departure from established policy. Departure from policy is usually couched within the context of benefit to the women being treated.
