Cannibalizing Japanese media: the case of Issei Sagawa

Article Abstract:

The manner in which the Japanese media regarded Issei Sagawa after he killed, raped and cannibalized a Dutch exchange student was examined. Sagawa seemed to acquire a celebrity status among fetishists after the crime and was even featured in an issue of the SPA! magazine. He was transformed from being criminal to victim as the magnitude of his crime was gradually diminished. Sagawa was also considered as representative of how the Japanese perceive the West. His reputation, however, taints Japan's drive towards internationalization.
