The political economy of Northwest Ohio agriculture and options for labor organization

Article Abstract:

Seasonal migrant workers, mostly of Hispanic heritage, would flock to Northwestern Ohio for work in vast tomato and cucumber farms during the early 1970s. There was a large number of these migrant workers that the organization of a labor union was necessary to protect their rights and to ensure the safety of their working conditions. The United Farm Workers and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee have succeeded in contracting nearly all area tomato and pickle growers and processors in the Midwestern states. However, the existence of these unions have threatened the tomato and the cucumber industry and have hastened the shift to mechanization to reduce labor costs.
