Carlos Castaneda and his followers: Finding life's meaning in your local bookstore

Article Abstract:

The reality of the ideas of Carlos Castaneda, a self-help advocate of the 1970s, need to be understood as practiced, interpreted and incorporated by his audience, in order to assess his status as a cultural icon and how his self-help books impacted his readership. The responses of twenty-five interviewees, which was organized around open-ended questions that focused on Castaneda's role in their evolving lives, leads to a portrayal that is a suggestive, credible account of his influence on his readers and the role of such self-help books in contemporary culture.

Quelling the "oxygen of publicity": British broadcasting and "the troubles" during the Thatcher years

Article Abstract:

Margaret Thatcher's tenure as British Prime Minister witnessed significant tension between the government and the electronic media in dealing with reported acts of terrorism in Northern Ireland. Thatcher's administration initially claimed that self-censorship in the media was their basic aim. However, they often persuaded the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to suppress programs which they believed gave undue publicity to the Irish revolutionaries. Eventually, the 1988 ban on the spoken words of republican extremists drew worldwide criticism.
