Chemical risk and the self-calculating farmer: diffuse chemical use in Australian broadacre farming systems

Article Abstract:

The use of chemicals by Australian farmers is a result of many influences, including the government and market pressures, and occurs despite an awareness of the environmental and health issues. The government protections for farmers have been eliminated to expand the influence of the market. Chemical use has been promoted by the government as more environmentally sound than mechanical soil cultivation. Farmers tend to use similar techniques to share risk, especially after increased exposure to unstable commodity markets.

Significant silents: sporting Australian on film, 1896-1930

Article Abstract:

The earliest Australian footage held by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is the 1896 Melbourne Cup. Indeed, sport is a key element of the NFSA holdings. Silent films made from 1896 until the 1930s cover a very wide range of sports, reflecting the great popularity of sport in Australian society. It is now time for this fascinating collection to be more widely publicized, allow it to present lessons about Australians and their past.
