Embryos and rights

Article Abstract:

The case of a frozen fertilized egg is raising a number of key issues. The embryos were fertilized in vitro, but the final developmental process was abandoned when its donors divorced. The woman wanted to donated it to an infertile couple, but her ex-husband claimed it would be violating his rights to fatherhood. His argument led to an analogous reflection towards the abortion issue. Since a man refused to be forced into fatherhood, a woman also cannot to be forced into motherhood. The rights of the embryo to life was also noted since it will only be viable for two years.

Impact of the Vietnam War on the civil rights movement in the midsixties

Article Abstract:

The civil rights movement in the mid-1960s was greatly influenced by the controversy surrounding the Vietnam War. The violence in Vietnam coincided with the rise of black militancy in the inner cities and the subversion of the non-violent tradition of civil disobedience. Discourses on the war impelled fractionalism within the civil rights organizations such as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference headed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Such conflicts decimated the effectiveness of the civil rights movement and instigated its decline in the United States.

Immigrants and refugees: policies and rights

Article Abstract:

International migration has become a serious problem for many governments and social scientists. There are more than 100 people who are living, voluntarily or involuntarily, outside their homelands. Governments are responding by implementing more restrictive immigration policies which, in turn, are alarming advocates of human rights, democracy and intercultural relations. Ten books are reviewed that examine the issue of migration from various perspectives.
