Roots of the anti-Vietnam war movement

Article Abstract:

The movement against the war in Vietnam in the 1960s was linked to the impact of the Depression and two world wars. The Second World War brought both Hiroshima and job opportunities for women and blacks which were later withdrawn. A critical examination of United States values followed, with the beat generation and later the hippies, embodying this nonconformity. This new generation grew up in relative affluence with parents who had experienced poverty in the depression. The civil rights movement also brought into question previous mainstream values in United States society.

Political process and the 1989 Chinese student movement

Article Abstract:

A study using the Doug McAdam's political process model was carried out to investigate the Chinese student's 1989 democracy movement in Beijing. The model, which was also used in a 1982 study of US civil rights movements, aims to analyze the factors that brought about the uprising. Three important variables were considered, namely: the structure of political opportunities, indigenous organizational strength and the process of cognitive liberation. The effects of precipitating events, such as Hu Yaobang's demise, were also included in the study.
