Chinese urbanization, state policy, and the world economy

Article Abstract:

Urbanization patterns in China are a product of the state policy and the changing relationships of the world economy. Effective official control of urban growth and international insulation prevented Chinese cities from experiencing the general Third World pattern of overurbanization and imbalances. China's period of experimentation with market economy have opened up the country to the world economy and induced the government to implement policies that will help cities to attract foreign capital. Thus urban bias is a concomitant of reintegration into the global economy.

Neighborhood development in the metropolitan economy: a policy review

Article Abstract:

National policies that aim to alleviate poverty and preserve neighborhoods in inner cities in the USA are analyzed. The argument presented pointed out that the proximity of jobs to residents is critical to the continuity of the neighborhood's existence. Further, it was argued that social, economic, and geographic systems in urban areas could be examined and manipulated at a larger scale such as that of the city neighborhood.

The second wave of globalization and agrarian change in the Pacific Islands

Article Abstract:

This article compares the first and second waves of globalization in the Pacific Islands and the impact it has had on the natives and agricultural practices. The authors argue that both waves brought social and economic upheaval in which the natives were forces to adapt to new agricultural techniques, suffering economic marginalization and environmental degradation of the land.
