Communication technology and local knowledges: the case of 'peripheralized' high-rise housing estates

Article Abstract:

An argument is presented favoring the proliferation of communication technology in non-elite or peripheralized housing communities, as it provides a vital link to mainstream society. The advantages and disadvantages of using this technology for surveillance are also discussed. The conclusion is based on a case study of 65 public-housing facilities in Edinburgh and 180 facilities in Glasgow.
