Contemporary Christian Music: where rock meets religion

Article Abstract:

Contemporary Christian Music (CCM), which first gained public attention in the late 1960s and infused a Gospel message into popular rock music form, is being used by many leading rock singers in the 20th century as a platform to seek radical changes in the church and in society. CCM is the genre through which numerous rock singers portray and criticize the principles and culture of a capitalist society and point at the irresponsible attitude of the Church in recognizing the needs of modern society.

99 years is almost for life: punishment for violent crime in bluegrass music

Article Abstract:

Bluegrass songs about murder are moralistic tales that establish modes of behavior and prescribe punishments for disobeying the accepted code. These songs, arising from a need to reinforce norms of social conduct, are often historically accurate and indicative of the attitudes to crime in the period of their composition. The songs espouse an ideology of state-sanctioned punishment so that social vengeance replaces individual retribution.
