Disaster preparedness: planning for the unexpected

Article Abstract:

Planning for disasters due to tornadoes, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes may prevent disruptions, hardships and death. Minimum preparation should include coverage in case of failure of basic utilities. Other important steps include an evacuation plan for work, school and home; choosing an out-of-state contact person; posting a list of emergency phone numbers; a kit of disasters supplies such as candles, matches, flashlight; and important papers assembled.

Control by sample location in pigeons' matching to sample

Article Abstract:

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of changes in sample location on pigeons' simultaneous versus zero-delay matching to sample performances. Results of the studies contribute to the body of literature demonstrating the significance of sample location in matching to sample studies with animals. They also indicate that location is so powerful a cue that training with variable sites does not weaken its control with other sample stimuli.

New members of the local group

Article Abstract:

Armandroff and team have discovered three new faint galaxies inside the Local Group, a small galaxy cluster dominated by the Milky Way, Triangulum and Andromeda. These new galaxies are dwarf spheroidal galaxies that are smaller than large elliptical and spiral galaxies, and, unlike dwarf irregulars, they have ceased to form stars. Their discovery raises questions relating to the number of galaxies that could be undiscovered that are even fainter.
