Air bass

Article Abstract:

The Air Bass designed by Art Center College of Design student Paolo Lanna was unanimously selected to receive the Best of Category award in the student work category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The Air Bass is a musical instrument made of hardwood and of sclupted and machined aluminum. Its shape was characterized as evocative of letters used in hot-metal typography. The Air Bass has a built-in amplification system and incorporates the latest electronic technology. A jazz enthusiast, Lanna incorporated his observations of how bass players interact with their instruments into the Air Bass.

Earth-sheltered housing: the way of the future?

Article Abstract:

Earth-sheltered housing or underground housing has several advantages over conventional above-ground housing with regards to energy use and land conservation aspects. Aside from the wind and storm protection offered by the earth, the in-house temperature is easily regulated due to the earth's large thermal mass. However, zoning regulations that prohibit underground housing constructions and the biases of certain individuals against earth-sheltered housing inhibit the wide acceptance of the concept.
