Ecumenical Housing: a mission at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

Ecumenical Housing Production Corp. (EHPC) owns and operates 170 single family homes in suburban St. Louis County, MO, and provides individually suited services to the families living in them. The beauty of the housing units owned by the nonprofit is that they mesh harmoniously with their established neighbors and that they are usually the most attractive on their blocks. Many families who live in these units move on from welfare into the economic and housing mainstream as a result of EHPC's self-sufficiency program while those who stay behind become stabilized and enjoy economic growth with their children benefitting from a safe and positive environment. Aside from the self-sufficiency program, which offers scholarships for career education and employment training, EHPC also provides sex education classes, educational enrichment programs, staff intern program and summer camp. It is no wonder then why EHPC has received numerous awards.

A model for fair and affordable housing

Article Abstract:

Boise, ID, successfully created a model program for fair and affordable housing. The Boise Affordable Housing Task Force was formed to investigate the short supply of affordable rental housing in 1993. Within a year, Oak Park Village, the first fair and affordable housing development, was introduced. A consortium of private, public and nonprofit community groups financed the 200-unit, $12.4 million development. Idaho Power Co. and Fred Meyer Retail Stores, which both recognized the opportunity to address the low-income and moderate-income housing needs of the city, handled 50% of the financing. The Idaho Housing and Finance Assn. took care of the long-term financing which included a permanent loan and a bridge loan. The apartments, which are not offered for long-term housing, provides upscale amenities, a combination of rental and owner-occupied units, and both affordable and market-rate housing units.
