Entropy and popular culture: product diversity in the popular music recording industry

Article Abstract:

A moderately concentrated market structure promotes high product diversity in the sound recording industry. Using robust techniques for measuring market share and diversity, it was shown that a competitive market structure does not necessarily lead to high product diversity. Regression analysis of the two measures of product variety show that there is nonlinear relationship between market concentration and product diversity. These results are expected to provide regulators further insight into the creation of a more effective antitrust policy.

Transitions to democracy: unpredictable elite negotiation or predictable failure to achieve class compromise?

Article Abstract:

Elite negotiation literature claims that democratic transitions are unpredictable because of the complexity of its timing and process. An examination of the class-compromise network, however, led to the identification of structural conditions that undermine stabilization. To verify this, the framework was applied to the Brazilian regime (1964-1985) and the Chilean regime (1973-1989). Results demonstrate that the structural conditions stated by the network do promote democratic transitions.

Culture, democracy and renewal

Article Abstract:

Cultural renewal created in Palermo, Italy, since the 1990s is relevant to combating organized crime by emphasizing citizen participation and social mobilization.
