Excuse me - what did you just say?!: Women's public and private responses to sexist remarks

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze women's struggle between their efforts to challenge sexism and the social pressures and costs that hinders them from publicly responding. Results indicated that a lack of responding was not necessarily suggestive of contentment about the remarks or a lack of views about confronting. Findings also showed that a number of factors prevented women to respond. These include diffusion of responsibility, normative pressures not to respond and social pressures to be polite.
