Fifty years of the Southern Sociological Society: change and continuity in a professional society. Methodological perspectives on studying the history of the Southern Sociological Society

Article Abstract:

The author shares her experience of writing a new History of the Southern Sociological Society on the occasion of its 50th year. Relying on information available through personal accounts of presidents, secretary- treasurers' reports and committee reports, she wrote a thesis on the history of the Southern Sociological Society showing its evolution from a community of scholars interested in studying the problems of the South to becoming a professional society.

An analysis of U.S. civil society

Article Abstract:

The features of the democratic civil society of the United States are described. A minimalist model of civil society in United States was used to extract what seemed to be the most important components of the institutions, both fromTocqueville's work and from pluralist democratic theory.

Doing public sociology in the field - a strong sociological intervention project in China

Sociological intervention is modified according to the reality of Chinese society to create a night school in Baigou that seeks to lay a foundation of self-consciousness in the migrant workers leading to self-liberation.
