The concept of folkway continues to thrive in introductory sociology textbooks where the term appears in the glossaries of the leading introductory textbooks. The commercial and pedagogical considerations are reflected in the introductory sociology textbook far more than any sort of intellectual influences, which is, in a sense, the embodiment of the discipline's folkways.

Blumer's dilemma: The critic as a tragic figure

Article Abstract:

Herbert Blumer's criticism of others' research is described, some of his empirical writings according to the standards he set are examined and it is suggested that Blumer's plight illustrates a pitfall that endangers much qualitative sociology. Blumer, the influential theorist created a dilemma by describing the contents of uncompromising, intellectually sound sociology, but actually doing sociology required compromising those principles.
