The last Surge to the South: the new enemies of Russia in the rhetoric of Zhirinovsky

Article Abstract:

Vladimir Zhirinovsky's rhetoric in 'The Last Surge to the South,' denounces the Moslem countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Middle East, and advocates an expansionist policy to counter the geopolitical threat from the south. Zhirinovsky's world view bemoans the dissolution of the USSR and his foreign policy betrays fascist leanings not unlike those of Nazi Germany. Reconquest of the CIS Republics and subjugation of Moslem states such as Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are the rhetoric ploys Zhirinovsky employs to win the Russian presidency.

Flowing waters and the nationalist metaphors

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the conflict between India and Bangladesh over sharing the waters of the Ganga River has raised the political issue of nationalism as perceived through the metaphors of the language of dispute. The Indo-Bangladesh dispute exemplifies the countries' national strategies of power, which elevates the problem to an international level. Conflict resolution has become a difficult challenge because of their self-locked positions created by a semantic tangle of ideas, concepts, and strategies. A perceived solution to the problem is to adopt a regional cooperation policy.

Oil on troubled waters: Indonesian sponsorship of the South China Sea Workshops

Article Abstract:

The South China Sea workshops that Indonesia organized to discuss the Spratly Islands have had considerable success in creating confidence and building security measures regionally. While not widely known outside the area, these workshops provide fodder for both the content and the format of more prominent conferences. Four meetings have been held thus far among the various claimants to these strategically located and potentially resource-rich islands, with admittedly little progress on their ownership and control.
