Illness narratives: fact or fiction?

Article Abstract:

A framework for the analysis of illness narratives is presented, along with a discussion of methodological issues. Topics include the rise of chronic illness and the crisis of bio-medical narratives, form and content in chronic illness narratives, and three narrative forms: contingent, moral and core narratives.

Prescribing and the defence of clinical autonomy

Article Abstract:

The practice of giving drug prescriptions being limited to physicians is being widely questioned in the UK. Patient expectations, often described as "clinical need," are cited to support professional practice, while "patient demand" is often seen as a threat to clinical autonomy.

The role of menopause in women's experiences of the 'change of life'

Article Abstract:

Most women are aware of menopause as a medical event yet tend to treat it as a series of social changes. The term "change of life" more accurately describes the many social and biological experiences that happen during midlife, and should be preferred.
