Media and discourse in the twentieth-century coffeehouse movement

Article Abstract:

The Beat generation had its origins in the coffeehouse movement of the 1950s since coffeehouses provided an ideal setting for the conversational intercourse that was integral to the Beat philosophy. Coffeehouses helped the Beat movement to define itself culturally by offering it the opportunity to forge its own body of literature and music. Electronic media coverage changed the way ideas were discussed from dialogic exchange to simple transmission, ultimately changing the concept of social movements on which the coffeehouse phenomenon was based.

Psychotropia: Medicine, media, and the virtual asylum

Article Abstract:

Psychotropia is a place of uncertainty and illusion, one in which the line between illness and cure is fabricated and where there is a paradox in the inextricable entanglement of the masses and media. It is a place of one's own making, born from the fear of losing collective grasp on reality and corresponding need for security, safety, and reassurance in a complex, overestimating, and dangerous society.

Not just another pretty victim: the incest survivor and the media

Article Abstract:

Sigmund Freud's theory on human sexuality superseded previous assumptions emphasizing that sexual deviance is an inherited trait. However, the feminist movement refutes Freud's theory because it promotes the institutionalization of violence against women. Films, such as 'Final Analysis,' on the other hand, depict incest survivors as scheming and totally in control rather than hapless victims.
