Must sociological theory and sociological practice be so far apart?

Article Abstract:

An agreement is made in support of Turner's suggestion that sociologists create engineering applications for their discipline in order for it to become more relevant to the real world and be a more credible field of study in the eyes of the general public. However, Turner's view that problems in sociological methodology can be attributed to flawed survey research is challenged by presenting practitioner error as the more likely cause. Also, problems of identity and relevance are seen as more relevant concerns rather than the issue of ideology in sociological practice.
