Occupation, biography and new social movements

Article Abstract:

Relatively recent social movements such as environmentalism, the peace movement, feminism and anti-racism are generally led by white collar workers. Research shows such people usually made political or activist commitments before higher education, and that familial socialization often intersected with personal experience to create these attitudes. Feminists in particular developed their ideological stance based in contradictions in socialization.

Deserving victims?: sexual status and the social construction of violence

Article Abstract:

Violence has many social constructions that vary according to gender and the concept of privacy. Definitions of violence involve socially appropriate behavior, culpability, and victimization. Violence is variously characterized as "normalized" or less intelligible. Since children are generally considered innocent victims of crime, a child committing homicide transgresses conceptual limits and social norms.

Against structure: a critique of morphogenetic social theory

Article Abstract:

Margaret Archer's work significantly influenced British social theory. She maintained objective social structure could not exist, and that sociologists need to examine relationships between individuals to understand how societies are ordered. This view suggests what is usually seen as "structure" should be called "organic" background, since it must by nature be unfinished and shifting.
