On the transformation of socialist cities

Article Abstract:

A macroeconomic analysis is presented on the socioeconomic status of metropolitan areas of the former Soviet Union since the collapse of communism in 1989. A comparison is made to other socialist cities such as Warsaw, Poland, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, selected cities in China, and Havana, Cuba, and the impact of non-government organizations, large rural populations, and the presence or absence of market controls.

Urbanization in transitional societies: an overview of Vietnam and Hanoi

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the impact of foreign investment on socialist ideology and processes in Vietnam, based on a comparison between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The shift in the country's political economy, known as doi moi, plays out differently in the two cities due to politics, history, infrastructure and the influence of rural-urban migration.

Reshaping Habana Vieja: revitalization, historic preservation, and restructuring in the socialist city

An overview is presented on urban renewal in Habana Vieja, Havana, Cuba's historic district, and its socioeconomic impact. The article focuses on the pivotal role of Habaguanex, a development corporation, in revitalizing the district, the commodification and exploitation of renovated sites, and the absence of community input in renovation projects.
