Partnerships and participitation: Reconfiguring urban governance in different state contexts

Article Abstract:

The discourse and practices of partnership approaches to urban governance in the United States and United Kingdom are compared through nationally-directed planning and revitalization programs. The language and underlying principles used to justify and advance such participation initiatives are similar, but differences in state structures in these two national contexts differentiate how and to what effect the engagement of local citizens actually occurs.

Commentary-writing cities against the grain

Article Abstract:

The task of writing cities can be achieved by seeking out alternative practices and experiments in cities, practices that attempt to wrest urban meanings and appropriate spaces away from their practices of dominant agendas. Another task is to describe different stories about cities, opening their pasts to re-evaluation so as to enable the imagining of different futures.
