Patient advocacy in psychiatry: Austrian and the Dutch models

Article Abstract:

A serious transformation in public attitudes toward medicine starting in the late 1960s has led to a general effort designed to strengthen the position of patients. Psychiatric patients, however, continue to frequently be denied as people with reasonable desires and opinions. The existing movement to buttress the position of psychiatric patients continues to rest substantially on legal debate. The patient advocacy programs in Austrian and Dutch mental hospitals are considered the best examples of institutionalized projects of psychiatric patient advocacy. They are analyzed.

International activity in undergraduate social work education in the United States

Article Abstract:

Social work academicians in the US aspire toward an international dimension in social work education. Although the faculty have a greater interest in international social work than the students, only a few undergraduate social work program directors are involved. Hence, social work education needs to inspire a greater level of international participation. Programs also need to prepare for entry-level generalists and the curriculum needs to focus more on international topics. More information needs to be gathered on the interests of faculty and students.
