Race and risk: factors affecting the framing of stories about inequality, discrimination, and just plain bad luck

Article Abstract:

The possible influences of the types of structural forces where news story framing are based were analyzed to determine how newspaper go about reporting race-related stories. Findings reveal that story framing varies significantly in presenting topical issues on race and risk. Structural features of the social environment were found to have lesser influence. The vital role of the subject and the story theme in news framing was demonstrated.

Housing inheritance and inequality: a response to Watt

Article Abstract:

A critique of a 1991 article that analyzes the validity of arguments regarding the role of home ownership and housing inheritance in the establishment of a new consumption cleavage regardless of social class brought up several questions about the class basis of housing inheritance. However, closer study shows that there is no basis for the criticisms against the article.

Cigarette smoking: a light on gender and class inequality in Britain?

Article Abstract:

A survey of smoking patterns in the United Kingdom showed a causal relationship between smoking and socio-economic status and a gender based difference in rate of decline. Material disadvantage and caring responsibilities acted as a deterrent to cessation among the women. Interventions seeking reduction in women smoking must consider these factors.
