Regional Growth Management Regime: The Case of Portland, Oregon

Article Abstract:

Those who advocate regime politics have traditionally restricted its use to political and commercial policies that exist within city limits. But regime politics can be applied outside of city boundaries. Officials who deal with the problems of urban growth must look at things from a regional level. The dynamics that exist between government and business on regional and national levels can impact the quality of life at a local level, as indicated by a study of growth management in Portland, OR.

Regime approaches to obscenity policy: 1960s to 1980s

Article Abstract:

Urban planners in Chicago, IL, and Seattle, WA, used different tactics to solve the problem of adult movie houses proliferating in downtown areas. Chicago officials used obscenity laws to threaten theater owners and also used land development policies to limit opportunities for the theaters. Seattle officials created a location in the downtown area where theaters could concentrate. Chicago policies drove theaters away from the downtown Loop. Seattle policies mollified citizen concern.
