Resistance, reconstruction, and romance in legal scholarship

Article Abstract:

Joel F. Handler's critique of postmodernism has some value but is too generalized and fails to address the philosophical underpinnings of the movement. Many of the political tendencies he ascribes to postmodernism could apply to other political schools of thought as well. He is right that much recent social scholarship has concentrated on specific experience to the exclusion of broader social analysis. He may also be right that the emphasis on localized resistance shows a growing lack of faith in the efficacy of collective action towards a grand social scheme.

Left at the post: one take on blacks and postmodernism

Article Abstract:

Joel Handler is largely correct in his analysis of the shortcomings of postmodern scholarship, however, the view of a black scholar on this issue can add to the discussion. There are those among black scholars who forget their roots and fail to use their intellectual expertise to work against black oppression. Blacks in general do not seem to be searching for a single over-arching ideology. Many ideas of community and commitment are tolerated and value is placed on creativity in bettering ones life.
