Social stigma and self-esteem: situational construction of self-worth

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the premise that self-esteem in the stigmatized is determined in the situation and correlates with collective representations, shared meaning and features of the situation. Attributions to prejudice and change in self-esteem were represented as a function of race of participant, feedback and visibility. Results indicated that self-esteem in the stigmatized may change from situation to situation depending on the relevance of the collective representations.

Mood, self-esteem, and counterfactuals: externally attributed moods limit self-enhancement strategies

Article Abstract:

Two studies were conducted to investigate the impact of self-esteem and external attributions for moods on the relationship between moods and counterfactuals. Positive and negative moods were manipulated in the first experiment using film clips while participants were directed to attribute their moods to something other than the film clips in the second experiment. Results showed that external mood attributions limit the influence of moods and self-esteem on counterfactual direction.
