Social structure, media system, and audiences in China: testing the uses and dependency model

Independent newspapers published in China since media restraints were removed in the 1970s are very popular and well liked by the Chinese people. While readership in Communist Party publications is still high, people are more likely to purchase and enjoy independent papers filled with international and consumer news.

Spreading global consumerism: Effects of mass media and advertising on consumerist values in China

Article Abstract:

The aims to demonstrate that advertisements and the types of media content related to consumption and/or originated from the West play a significant role in shaping consumerist orientations among China's urban residents is stated. Implications of the findings and directions for future studies are discussed.

Orchestrating the family-nation chorus: Chinese media and nationalism in the Hong Kong handover

Article Abstract:

This article explores the nationalistic ideology portrayed in Chinese media during reunification with Hong Kong. The authors assert the media portrayed the handing over of Hong Kong as a festive event and promoted the belief that Chinese nationalism transcends ethnic and geographic differences.
