Stanley and Clifford: undoing an interactionist text

Article Abstract:

Two interactionist versions of the story of Stanley, a juvenile delinquent, shows the difference between objective experiences and their subjective, interactional meanings and expressions. However, they ignore problems of real lives by turning Stanley into an analytic and ideal type. The texts generate a romantic over-identification with society's undesirables. The texts sympathize with social underdogs without challenging the present reality.

Contested approaches in the study of poverty: the Canadian case and the argument for inclusion

Article Abstract:

The authors question the validity of poverty studies in post-industrial societies that focus on a growing underclass or a systemically marginalized group. Instead, research presented suggests the poor are a mobile, diverse social category with a relatively stable population resembling other sections of society.
