Success and failure among polygamous families: The experience of wives, husbands and children

Article Abstract:

Members of 10 polygamous families consisting of 1 husband, 2 wives and children in a Bedouin Arab town in the south of Israel were interviewed to investigate polygamy. Findings suggest that polygamy in both well-functioning and poor families is painful, particularly to wives but there are other points which enable family members to function well like maintaining an attitude of respect toward the other wife and allowing open communication among all siblings and the other mother.

Negotiated nonmonogamy and male couples

Article Abstract:

The issue of sexual exclusivity and nonexclusivity within male couples is explored considering the clinical and cultural challenges of the therapists. It is suggested that the therapists must recognize the discomfort levels the male couples have about homosexuality and love between men, and engage couples in conversation that would help them decide for themselves whether sexual exclusivity or nonexclusivity is functional or dysfunctional for the relationship.
