Article Abstract:

Michael Powell, FCC chairman, completed his fourth year in this post in December 2004 and fought for public policy during his tenure by pushing aside ideology. Michael Powell outlined his vision of network freedom and gave a clear message to the network owners about building a neutral network or facing an impatient federal regulator.

Voice-over-IP's unlikely hero

Before leaving his position, Michael Powell, commissioner of Federal Communications Commission stopped Madison River, an internet service provider for the Southeast and Midwest from providing voice over IP (VoIP) to it customers. The details of the commissioner's action are presented.
