The challenge of economic development in an African developing country: social work in Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

Zimbabwe is trying to modify its approach toward social work by promoting social development orientation. The traditional, remedial role of social service is unsuited to the country's need for economic development particularly in the face of drought, economic diversity, and poverty. The School of Social Work in Zimbabwe has made significant contributions by promoting a curriculum that is compatible with the social development approach. This curriculum has relevance for social work schools in other countries which require developmental perspectives.

Families and mental illness: observations from two developing countries

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted on how two developing countries deal with the needs of families taking care of mentally ill persons. Results indicated that families felt isolated despite visits from nurses or trips to clinics because they received no support from mental health services or even from their own extended families. The development of social services for families caring for a mentally ill relative could be a very effective solution to this particular social need.
